When updating my index of soups, I realized I have a lot of recipes on Springpad. Over 1000 and counting — and that doesn’t include the bookmarks that link to interesting articles and other information about food or the delicious links that I imported into Springpad (but have not yet gotten around to copying into the recipes). Slow-cooked, hot and bubbly — they are great winter foods, and I have several variations on the theme; ragu (or ragout), stroganoff, cassoulet, goulash, chili (or chile), baked beans, ….
After making the list, I am surprised how very few I actually have in my recipes as I cook this sort of thing pretty reguarly through the colder months of the year. There must be more of these in my springpad archive; but here’s what I’ve found thus far. I’ll update it again when I have found more.

I have a huge batch of parsley in my fridge. Other than adding a handful of the stuff to each meal this week, here’s a list of recipes that use parsley. I have more than this in springpad; but stopped searching after a bit. These recipes rely on the parsley as more than just a garnish.
- Chimichurri A condiment, supposedly. I use this as a marinade for chicken, turkey and even beef.
- Low-Fat Thousand Island Dressing.
- Ranch dressing.
- Quinoa Tabbouleh Salad with Parsley and Mint I’ve not tried this one yet; but with summer weather fast approaching, it sounds like a good lunch-time salad.
- White bean and tuna salad.
- Onion and Feta salad.
- Farrow salad.
- Salad Nicoise.
- Mark Bittman’s White fish fillet a dozen ways Lists parsley, not only as a garnish, but as an ingredient in both classic sauteed and and roasted with herbs.
- Vegetable cassoulet.
- Hunter’s style chicken.
- Braised pork loin with vegetables and mashed potatoes.
- Borlotti Beans in Tomato Sauce with Creamy Polenta.
- Short Ribs Provencal.
- Baked Falafal. Falafal.
- Twice-Baked Parmesan Rosemary Sweet Potatoes.
- Sausages and green lentils with tomato salsa.
- Thai style chicken legs. Use parsley instead of cilantro.
- Crabmeat-Stuffed Flounder Roulades.
- Hamburger and Macaroni.
- Slim chicken Parmesan.
- Arrozo de Verduras.
- Salmon with citrus dressing.
- No-cream tuna noodle casserole.
The recent article, Mark Bitman’s custom soups, led me to wonder just how many soup recipes I have in my SpringPad cookbook. Overall the list is impressive; and it doesn’t even get into the stews (curries, cassoulets, ragus, baked or crockpot stews) and the chilis (bean, meat, corn, and various combinations). Then there’s the pasta sauces that you could eat withouth the pasta … but maybe that’s stretching too far afield.
For a long time I’ve been a proponent of stone stoup; that is you make soup with what you have and not what you can buy. While not everyone agrees with it, I like the many and varied results. Which means that, while I probably do start with a recipe for soup — I very rarely follow it.
I typically make way more soup than I need; although I’ve also made just enough for 1 or 2 people. I like that most all soups freeze and store well; and that they make excellent brown bag lunches (especially when carried in a mason jar).
Most all of these recipes work well in a crockpot; but then again my notes say there are very few here that I’ve actually tried.
Once a month I make stock of some kind (vegetable rarely, beef occasionally, and chicken regularly). I freeze what I don’t use immediately — and pull it out to deglaze pans instead of wine or alcohol, and use as a cooking liquid for rice, barley and sometimes even pasta.
